The project was started in 1981 by Massimo Pigliucci, then
of CUN Rome branch and in 1984 it was passed on to Paolo
Fiorino, who has been specializing in that research area
since 1978. The project consists of filing all documents
referring to each Italian report concerning UFOs associated
with "entities" (CE III). As of now, it has amassed
as many as 718 case files, a massive archive of papers that
amounts to more than 10.000 pages, and a collection of about
130 audio and video tapes. As of investigations, the
co-ordinator has personally conducted or directed more than
130 investigations, and the archive includes more than 160
reports by various investigators. One of the most compelling
objectives is the cataloguing of all cases. A computerized
catalogue has been kept updated by Umberto Cordier as of the
main data for each case, but it will be completed with
summaries of the inquiries, comments and source lists. Such
task is difficult because of the heterogeneity of the
available materials (many cases have sundry sources and are
understandably difficult to investigate). On the long period
a data analysis is planned, which will use statistical and
comparative approaches (see E. Zurcher, "Les
apparistions d'humanoides", A. Lefeuvre, Nice, 1979).
The co-ordinator is also interested in an analysis of the CE
III phenomenology and in the interaction with the ufological
historiography (E. Russo, "Verso una storiografia
ufologica", Notiziario UFO, n. 102, 1983, pp. 147/165).
On the long period a comparative analysis is also planned of
the CE III cases in Italy and in France during the 1954 wave,
and in Italy and in the USA during the 1973 wave. For sake of
completeness, Paolo Fiorino is also interested in contactees
and UFO cults, and he is presently working with Giuseppe
Stilo on the possibility of cataloguing and the establishing
of an appropriate methodology.
